Boat Statistics
The model: The model is brand new for Danny in 2010. His son Tony decided to build him a new boat after three years with a carbon fiber boat that was a little big and ill handling. The model was built in a total of three weeks. It was then handed over to Danny for paint and graphics. It’s a very sharp looking boat that handles better than his old carbon boat, although it needs some tuning. The boat suffered a meeting with an I-Beam at Coulon in its first race. It will need a new tip on the right sponson, but that’s all the damage it suffered. Danny has plenty of time to get this new ride handling just right.
The real boat: The boat was an instant front runner when it was brought into competition in 1973. Jim Lucero designed and built the boat that earned the nick name “winged wonder,” being the first boat to sport a successful rear wing. Mickey Remund piloted the boat in 1973 and went on to win the national high points. He then left to race with the Budweiser team. New driver “Smiling” George Henley drove the boat in the 1974 and 75 seasons. George would clean house both those years and win two straight national championships. After the 1975 season, owner Dave Heerensperger decided to step out of racing and sold the hull to Bill Muncey, who raced it in 1976 under the colors of Atlas Van Lines. In 1977, the boat came back for a brief period of time as the Pay ‘N’ Pak once again. In 1978, the boat was sold again to the Madison Racing team where it stayed the rest of its life when it was finally retired in 1988.
