01/17/12:  Triple Crown Series to Debut in 2012!

Last year's 1:10 Scale Fall Regional was the third such race of its kind since the class was added to the NAMBA Official Rule Book.  We are very happy to announce that an even greater commitment to further establishing regional events in this area is being made.  2012 will mark the debut of the Northwest 1:10 Scale Triple Crown Championship Series which will consist of three regional points races.  So far, the effort has been driven primarily by the members of Classic Thunder and ERCU, but we hope that the series will gain popularity and encourage other clubs in our area to host their own regional races in the series in years to come.  We are putting the finishing touches on a sponsorship agreement for the series which should enable us to, among other things, come up with creative awards and trophies for each event and to present a nice award to a series points champion in the vintage and modern class at the end of 2012.  The series will kick off this year with a Spring Regional to be held on March 18th at Gissberg Twin Lakes in Marysville, WA.  We're looking forward to it and hope that everyone out there interested in 1:10 Scale boats will consider helping out and showing their support.  As usual, verification of your NAMBA membership or a one event waiver is required to compete.  Update your NAMBA membership now as you'll also need it for your upcoming club racing seasons too.  View the TCS flyer link below to get some basic information on the new series.  If you have questions, contact Mitch Dillard at hydroscale@gmail.com.

01/15/12:  News From Ron!

Ron Forister has been busy.  We got this update from him recently: "The Plumbing Joint is now stripped of its colors, soon to sport a salt water scoop and a new paint job.  I can only say it will have red on it.  several mods are going to be done and hoping to at least present it at the February hydro show.  If not, it will debut at test sessions after that for sure.  I've been working with Jeff Ross at Ground Up Designz for the vinyl wrap color scheme."   Well Ron, we're looking forward to seeing he finished project unveiled for the 2012 season.  CT News has its own insight on what boat it's going to be, but it would only be a guess.  Way to keep us in the dark.

Ron also says that both Miss Madisons are doing fine and are ready to test again come end of month testing sessions.

01/01/12:   Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2012!  We had our New Years Day Fun Run at Coulon Park again this year and can't remember when the weather cooperated so well.  Several boats hit the water for a good day of testing and a bunch of us boat guys showed up to do a little off-season chit chat in front of and around the fire.  Thanks to Battery Dave Sacry for furnishing the wood and for everyone who turned out.  Thanks also to Jim Clark for bringing his camera and photography skills down as well.  Jim has posted a gallery of the event on his photo site so everyone can view the boats that were in attendance.  Now it's time to get ready for the upcoming racing season.  We'll do the best we can to keep everyone updated as the season schedule is finalized, so stay tuned.  Let us know what you've been workin on too.  There's always more room for CT News and photos of your projects as they take shape.

12/01/11:   Mark Unveils the 88!

Yep, he's done it again.  Take a look at this beauty.  Mark Beatty has completed the paint and graphics on his new 88 Degree Men boat for 2012.  It's as much of a  knockout as the real boat was when it hit the scene this year.  It took five months to complete the project, but it was worth the wait.  Prism Graphics went out of their way to create the graphics for the model.  They also did the real boat, so you can see why it turned out so cool.  The decals are vinyl, but the silver graphics are made of a thinner material that is used to wrap cars.  The big chore for Mark was to get the graphics laid down on the dropped sponson decking without trapping air bubbles under it.  Laying down the graphics took him about four hours to complete, but it turned out even better than he imagined it would.  We can't wait to see this one up close.  I'm sure the small photos don't do it justice.  This is just a little tease to get you to come on out to the lake to get a chance to see it when it's ready to run.  Nice work Mark!

11/29/11:   Prop Shop joins CT!

A message from CT Commissioner, Bryan Deatherage about our latest sponsor:

It is with great pride and satisfaction that Classic Thunder welcomes yet another sponsor for 2012, the fine people at Prop Shop UK.  For those of you who may not be aware, Prop Shop UK(located in Banbury, Oxfordshire, near Birmingham) makes some of the finest model props on the planet.  Their vast inventory of right handed props is second to none.  They cast their props in both stainless steel and nibral(nickel-bronze-aluminum), which by the way does not contain any of the hazardous beryllium copper that we must be protected from when filing or sharpening on other brands.

I had the privilege of meeting Simon Higgins, the braintrust at Prop Shop UK, and his son Daniel while attending the International Model Boat Show in the UK Nov 12th.  After lengthy and enjoyable discussions about his business and what we do with scale hydroplanes here in the Pacific Northwest, I was very pleased when his company accepted our invitation to join us at CT.

Another point worth mentioning is that the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the British Pound is very favorable to us right now.  That means that you can purchase  Simon's props at a fantastic price considering that they come to you balanced and polished with just a touch of sharpening needed before using.

11/15/11:   3 New Boat Updates!

We've received some off-season updates on new boats.  First, we have the latest photos of Dave Helton's 2011 Valken.com boat.  It's looking good and is likely being worked on down at his winter haven in sunny Arizona.  Second, we got news that Dale Van Wyk is working on a new boat for Tony Minalia to drive in 2012.  Tony put in an order for a new Berryessa Belle for division 1.  You may remember that Tony broke in to driving using Dale's old Berryessa Belle which his wife Jessica had driven in the past.  It's only fitting that Tony chose the Belle as his new boat to be built.  Lastly, we have a Thriftway Too hull being worked on in the shop of Mike Krone.  Mike got this boat from former club member Doug Tulip and is looking to finish the boat for himself.  We're not sure when he plans to finish it, but it's on his list of things to do at home.  We're looking forward to seeing what the rest of the club is working on, so send us your news!

10/05/11:   Mark's at it again!

Mark Beatty has some new projects going.  Three boats are in construction stage and looking good.  From left to right we start with a Div 2 backup boat, the heavily modified 1983 Miss Prodelco.  The middle boat is the much anticipated first of his 2011 88 Degree Men models.  Lastly, he has started work on a new division 1 boat.  This one will be the 71 Budweiser Malt Liquor, a boat chosen specifically to "spank" the 64 Michelob of his arch nemesis, big Dale Schroeder.  2012 is already shaping up to be an exciting season.

10/04/11:   Dave's Progress on the Valken.com and More!

Here are some good progress shots of the 2010 U-7 Valken.com hydro that Dave Helton is building.  He has gotten a lot more building done much quicker than anyone would have expected.  He says that having the vacuum formed plastic parts from Mitch Dillard to use was a big help.  Dave obviously knows how to use them.  The boat looks fantastic so far and is going to be a nice model when it's done.  Dave has also got another project going.  This one is really cool too.  He has sent us a link to his photo album of his recently completed restoration of a 1937 Indian Chief motorcycle.  He first saw the classic over 30 years ago and, as luck would have it, finally got a great deal on it from the owner who just wanted to see it properly restored.  Since Dave did most of the work himself, he saved on restoration cost.  Better yet and in his own words "In the end I have the joy of saving another american icon for every one to see and enjoy. It will remain in my collection until I pass and then some one else will get to enjoy it as I have."

09/26/11:   Updates from Tony!

After a rough season of racing, Tony Minalia's 1993 Miss Budweiser is getting stripped of all paint, fixing the race damage, and repainted as the 93 Budweiser again for the 2012 season. The Bud narely missed a top five placing in the seasons points standing for division two. After chasing consistency all season, the boat finally found it the second half of the season and began scoring big. Finding its way to the podium two times in a row. However at the Governor's Cup, the boat only finished one of its heats after a DNF and a DNS for the day. If the Bud has the same speed and consistency in 2012 as it did at the end of the 2011 season, you can count on fighting for wins. This is Tony's best boat to date and he is very happy with it.

Also making a return to div2 for Tony is the tiger boat. Thats right, the Frosted Flakes is coming back. It was slated to race in 2011, but focus was kept on the 93 Bud and the points battle. Like the Bud, The Flakes will be getting some TLC this offseason after sitting for over a year. It will only make a handful of races but will be competitive nonetheless.

For div1, Tony plans on keeping the 1968 Budweiser race ready but wont be his primary boat. He will be recieving a brand new Berryessa Belle from Dale Van Wyk. Tony raced the Belle a couple seasons ago with great success. It will be the first hull that Tony has not built himself since he joined the club back in 2005.

Tony also reports that the 2011 DVD is almost complete. Price has yet to be settled.

Stay safe race fans!
